This person really wasn't sick, but was reluctant to go to work because of the drive. You see, after watching the weather channel this person thought the roads might be slippery, and as this person is very cautious he/she thought it would be better to just take the day off. Well, he/she did go to work, and at work this person was pulled aside and his/her manager told him/her they were receiving an award for the fewest sick days taken. How funny would it have been if they called this person up to accept their award, and then someone said "He/she isn't here... he/she called in sick today". I thought it would have been hilarious.

CID

My parents have a lot of cool words and phrases. I was at Sears with my mom and dad. We were there to buy a new refrigerator . The salesman was a nice guy, but he said something that made me laugh. I had to walk away. He was showing us the features of one particular fridge and while pointing to the door said "This door can hold two 4 liter jugs of milk". I know that's not funny in itself, but it was the way he said it... as though 2 jugs of milk are a lot...haha

On Saturday, a lady I had never met before said to me "with teeth like yours you could work in a dental office." :D

Starbucks

Since returning home from Philadelphia I've been surrounded by an abundance of Starbucks', and in the past 2 years I had gotten addicted... having at least one, and maybe two drinks a day. A couple of years before starting dental school (and in response to the anonymous comment left a couple of days ago: "No, I've never been to China, nor do I have a degree in engineering, but I will consider the suggestion you made about a future post.. thanks") I would go to Starbucks often, but not as much as I had been recently.

I moved to Philadelphia in 2001, and at that time there were 2 Starbucks' in Center City (separated by at least 10 blocks). I remember a discussion in one of my business classes. The other students were shocked that living in a suburb of Vancouver I had 4 Starbucks` within a 3 minute drive from my house.

I decided to try and quit (or at least cut down) this terrible addiction, and it was actually pretty easy to break the habit. I decided I would allow myself one (sometimes two) drinks a week. A day or two after I stopped the daily Starbucks visits I received a letter from Starbucks with a $10 gift card. When I opened the letter and saw the gift card I immediately thought "How'd they know?!?!?", but then I read the letter. Starbucks was just sending me the gift card to apologize for the delay in processing my refund for a coffee maker recall. How nice of them. Then the next day, the cheque for the refund came, as well as a coupon for a new coffee maker at a reduced price and a free bag of coffee beans. The timing I thought was funny.

About a week after that I received a new credit card in the mail. My credit card company suspected fraud and some suspicious activity with my card and issued me a new one. Weird, I thought, since all I bought on that card on a regular basis was gas, and coffee. I wondered did the absence of my Starbucks' purchases cause my credit card company to believe something was wrong? :|

"At least now you have something to blog about"

I haven't updated my blog with any personal stories for a while now, and up until recently my blog wasn't even functioning. Well, I'm going to try and post more regularly from now on. The truth is that not much is going on. I work 5 days a week, and when I'm not working I spend time with my family and friends. I won't blog about the funny stuff that happens at work, because that wouldn't be right.

Today I went to the Sukh Sagar Nagar Kirtan, and along with my cousins, set up a table for dental information at the "Free Medical Camp" tent. The "camp" consisted of the three of us with toothbrushes, toothpaste, and some dental literature. There was also a physician who brought some write-ups on different medical conditions. It was a lot different from what I envisioned. But still, I thought this would be a nice way to educate people on the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene.

The first individual who came to our table was not happy. He made some suggestions about what we should have done, and what we were doing wrong. At first I thought he was kidding, but he just went on to describe the ways in which India was better than Canada... something about an issue he had with his own dentist, and how to resolve something here one would need to go to court and hire an expensive lawyer, but in India even the poor are able to threaten to kill someones family member and get justice. He did have some valid points, and he seemed pleased with himself at the end of our conversation. My cousin left the tent laughing hysterically during one of his stories. I'm sure he noticed but he just kept on going. It was so weird.

Things got better after that (how could they not?). Most people wanted to know if they could have their blood pressure checked. I thought this was a valid request, considering the sign said "Free Medical Camp", but we didn't bring a cuff, and neither did the physician. One elderly man asked us what we were doing (in Punjabi). We told him we were providing dental information, to which he replied "I don't have any teeth, can you check my eyes?"

I think the funniest comment came from a middle-aged woman. She asked about what we were doing. Again, I told her we were here to provide dental information. She asked if that was all we were doing, I told her "yes". Then she asked "What if someone has pain?" I, with concern in my voice, asked her if she did have a toothache or a problem, thinking that I could help her by giving her possible explanations for her pain. She quickly responded "No" with a confused look, surprised that I thought she had a toothache. At that point her and her friend started laughing.

The title of this post is what my cousin said at the end of the day, but I don't think I'm articulate enough to provide the true essence of our experience. You really just had to be there... it was funny, it was sad, it was rewarding, and frustrating all at the same time. That being said... I can't wait until next time!

Bed Bugs

Walmart "Best Sellers"

recent msn conversation:

pavandeep says:
nick carter only brushes his teeth 3 times a week :|
Someone who should be ashamed of themselves says:
i don't brush mine at all

That's gross, no wonder he's suffering from chronic toothaches.

gum butoo-a

A wallet made of orbit gum packages...

Why my mom holds onto the passenger side door handle when I'm driving...

The study, based on North American driving statistics as gathered by an online insurance quoting service, ranks the likelihood of getting involved in an accident or receiving a traffic ticket -- and both -- based on an individual's astrological sign...

The data was collated by Stanford University professor Keyvan Mohajer.

According to the study:

- Those who are at the greatest risk of receiving traffic tickets are born between Feb. 19 and Mar. 20 (Pisces).

- Those who are at the greatest risk of getting in a traffic accident are born between Sept. 23 and Oct. 22 (Libra).

- Those who are at the greatest risk overall (both traffic tickets and traffic accidents) are born between Sept. 23 and Oct. 22 (Libra).

The full lists are as follows:

Drivers and traffic tickets:
1. In about May of that year I asked my Dad when we were taking our lights down. Growing up I never saw anyone with Christmas lights up in the summer, so I thought our lights would come down... not so. My Dad told me that our Christmas lights were securely stapled in place-they weren't going anywhere. Christmas lights year round... sounds silly to some, but it's quite common to see houses in Surrey lit up on random days throughout the year. Fortunately we didn't invest in the lights that look like icicles. People will turn their Christmas lights on for vaisakhi, lohri, diwali, someones birthday, weddings... pretty much anything. Our Christmas lights are on tonight for Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Gurpurab.

Brush with Stardom

Earlier tonight there was an emergency forum held by Radio India addressing the recent cases of domestic abuse in Surrey. It was a good forum- the accounts, and insight given by victims of domestic violence/abuse were especially touching. The hall was packed with people, and not just Punjabis- I saw a number of whites and blacks as well. I had planned to take some pictures of the speakers, but from where we were sitting I couldn't really get any good shots. I started playing around with the setting on my camera, which only made the situation worse. Here's one of the pictures I took:

That's Dilbir Kang on the right (he's a celebrity). After I took this picture, I looked up to see that Dilbir Kang (famous news reporter) had turned the camera on me! I wanted to die right then and there. He asked me what I thought of the forum, and I said something stupid. I'm pretty sure that's not a clip they can use (I really, really hope that they don't air what I said). If they had just given me a moment to collect my thoughts, I would have said something completely different.

I would have commented on what the host of the forum said. I think he was from Radio India; he stated that victims of domestic violence could call Radio India for help. I thought that was silly. Also, Sukh Dhaliwal said that his office would be available 24 hours for anyone who was a victim of domestic violence. Why on earth would these people, who as far as I know, are not trained to deal with such serious issues, offer themselves as a resource? I can't imagine a Punjabi woman showing up at Sukh Dhaliwal's office at 2am, asking him for help. Instead, why not encourage people to call 911, and report the matter to police? Perhaps one of the issues that prevents victims from calling 911 is that they aren't able to communicate in Punjabi (or whatever language they speak if it isn't English or French). Well, if that's a valid concern, then why not figure out a way to have Punjabi-speaking operators available when needed. Because there is such a large Punjabi speaking community in the Lower Mainland I would be surprised if there weren't Punjabi-speaking operators available.

The best part of the forum was seeing how many people cared. If everyone who was there talks to one or two other people about domestic violence, maybe victims won't feel shame in coming forward, and maybe someone who sees violence won't think they should 'mind their own business', but instead report it to authorities (the police, not Sukh Dhaliwal or Radio India).

I'm lost

Since I started watching Lost, I've come to realize that there are two types of people in the world; those that watch Lost, and "others" [sic]. What's bothering me tonight is the fact that there are two new castaways! Where did they come from?!?! They just don't fit in. They don't seem as "lost" as everyone else does. It's like they're just visiting, and if you ask me they're wearing out their welcome. And what's happening to all the black characters? Michael (stupidhead), and Walt made it off the island, but now Mr. Eko is dead, and what happened to Rose? Does anyone even remember Rose?!?!? There are too many people to keep track of now.

I'm not happy.

Pumpkin carving

VICTIM

PLAN

TOOLS

AUDIENCE

more on flickr

:O

My last day at this office was in April... Since March, the term "maggots" has been one of the top searches on this blog. Here are the top three searches for September:

1. 2181 64.07% maggots
2. 108 3.17% liger
3. 91 2.67% stupid cat

I came across this article and thought it might be of interest.

Hospital refuses to admit son with maggots

MAGGOTS were crawling inside his son’s mouth but doctors refused to hospitalise his son.

Yu Hong Di, 58, from Bukit Pelanduk, Negri Sembilan, recalled this when he tried to seek medical help for his 24-year-old son, Bao Qing, several days ago...

Bao Qing slipped into a vegetative state after suffering from Japanese Encephalitis in 1999.

Several days ago, blood began oozing out from Bao Qing's mouth and when Yu took a closer look, he found maggots crawling inside.

He called a doctor who later wrote a reference letter for Bao Qing to be admitted to Seremban Hospital.

The hospital refused to admit him and despite him begging, doctors claimed that Bao Qing's condition did not require him to be hospitalised...

When Bao Qing's condition did not improve, Yu brought him to Seremban Hospital again but once more, he was refused admission.

“They just applied medicine on the sores inside his mouth but now, there are three sores with maggots inside and the sores are growing bigger.

“I caught as many as eight maggots and the condition is worsening,” he said.

Chuah State Assemblyman Foo Ming Chee later arranged for Bao Qing to be admitted into the Port Dickson Hospital.

poor guy.

related:
