Drink Milk!

food for thought:
"You probably are wondering what will happen to your bones and teeth if you stop drinking milk. The majority of the world's population takes in less than half the calcium we are told we need and yet they have strong bones and healthy teeth.
Cows' milk is rich in phosphorous which can combine with calcium -- and can prevent you from absorbing the calcium in milk. The milk protein also accelerates calcium excretion from the blood through the kidneys.
This is also true when you eat large amount of meat and poultry products. Vegetarians will need about 50% less calcium than meat eaters because they lose much less calcium in their urine.
It is possible to obtain all your calcium from dark green vegetables (where do you think the cow gets their's from?). The darker the better. Cooked collard greens and kale are especially good. If you or your child is unable to take in large amounts of green vegetables, you might want to supplement with calcium. "

hey, i mean no harm here at all. i just can't stand animal cruelty and the fact that the dairy council is winning people over with their marketing of lies.
have you tried chocolate almond milk yet? i never thought i could give up chocolate milk until i tried that stuff and i was instantly hooked!

and it even has calcium in it. ;) calcium that can actually be put to use, even. unlike, you know...

Hi Penelope,
Thanks for your comment. Animal cruelty isn't something i support either. I've been a vegetarian since I was 8 (20 years ago).
After reading a comment on my blog about pus and blood in milk (which resulted in my giving up dairy for 3 days), I looked into milk and its production: http://www.bcdairyfoundation.ca/about_milk/milkquality.htm
I think standards for milk production are better in Canada. Still, I have switched to organic milk : http://www.avalondairy.com/
I have tried almond milk (vanilla and chocolate) and it is pretty good.
Check out the links I've provided, I'd like to see what you think about them.

hey! that's great that you've been veg for so long! it's truly commendable that you realised your compassion at such a young age.
my thoughts on the links (i have a lot to say but i'll keep it brief):
where do the cows that are on antibiotics go (and quite frankly, i really struggle trusting what any company who profits from the misery of another creature has to say, know what i mean)?
where do the male calves go? they can't be milked so they end up in veal crates if they're not slaughtered right then and there. dairy cows end up as hamburger way before they live out a natural lifespan. cows can live to be 25 years old but are often killed at 5 or 6 years old once their milk dries up or they get too sick to produce - if they make it that long.

the bottom line for me, is that cows are enslaved by humans and i don't support slavery of any kind. i was an ovo-lacto vegetarian for many years before i realised what a hypocrite i was being. :)
welfarist laws bother me because i'd just rather see every animal living their lives of their own free will, but if someone absolutely can't give up eating them, organic and free range is definitely a better option than factory farmed animals. free range doesn't always mean what people thinks it means though. another point is that organic and "free-range" animals all end up at the same slaughterhouse. and that's another reason why welfarist laws bother me. but i ain't getting into it here.
