Sikhs in Canada
I found a timeline documenting Sikhs in Canada. Look under 1949:
Prime minister Nehru visited the Vancouver Sikh temple with his
daughter Indira Gandhi.

:S
Kind of weird, since you never hear of the current Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, visiting Gurdwaray when he makes visits to North America. He might have visited Gurdwaray on his visits, I just couldn't find anything online to confirm. And just to clarify I'm not saying he's wrong not to visit Gurdwaray, since he's not a Sikh representative/leader/spokesperson, and therefore under no real obligation. I'm just saying it's weird because he calls himself a Sikh, and it's not too crazy to assume that Sikh might want to visit a Gurdwara or two on their own conviction. But what do I know, anyways?

Ganga Sagar...
My mom's Massar lived in Raikot, and their house had belonged to the Khan family until partition. I think the Ganga Sagar was the only possession the Khan family took with them when they had to leave Raikot, and go to Pakistan.
I found an account of Ganga Sagar here.

In 1704 Guru Gobind Singh Ji went to Machiwara after leaving Anandpur Sahib. During those severe hardship days some of the rajas refused even to offer help to Guru Sahib due to the fear of death as Aurangzed was after the life of the Guru Sahib and his family.
When Guru Sahib reached Raikot state the muslim chief Rai Kalha welcomed him and felt honoured in offering his services to Guru Sahib and his guests for as long as he wanted to stay. Guru Ji spent 16 days with Rai Kalha.
It was in Raikot that Guru Sahib got the most tragic news of the death of his two minor sons and his mother. The news was brought from sarhind by Noora Mahi who was deputed by Rai Kalha for the seva of Guru Sahib.
Guru Sahib during his stay asked Noora Mahi to give him milk in Ganga Sagar which was a part of his personal belongings. Noora Mahi said that his buffalo did not give milk and even if it did the milk will not stay in Ganga Sagar as it had holes in it. Guru Sahib told him to take the name of God and start milking the buffalo. To the utter suprise and amazement of Noora Mahi, the buffalo gave milk and it did not pour out. Before leaving Raikot, in and in appreciation of the services and hospitality extended by Rai Kalha, a Muslim chief, who risked his own and his family's lives, Guru Gobind Singh Ji presented Ganga sagar and a sword to Rai kalha as personal gifts.
Till 1947 the Ganga Sagar was displayed for the Raikot, Dist. Ludhiana by Khan Bahadur Rai Inayat Khan. The owner of Gangar Sagar is now Rai Azizullah, grandson of Khan Bahadur Rai Inayat Khan and the present heir of the Rai family who have kept this sacred gift of Guru Gobind Singh Ji with great respect and care for almost 300 years.....

My cousin's son, Chanpreet, started a blog recently. Although his profile says he's 13, he actually just turned 10.
This picture is from a couple of months ago... he started keeping his hair recently.

Hit-and-run death (from 2003)

Harchan Singh Grewal was my mom's Fuffar.
A Surrey driver has been sentenced to a five-year jail term for the hit-and-run death of an elderly man. That's two years more than the sentence requested by the Crown.

Ramesh Prasad, 51, had been drinking in September 2003 when he ran into 77-year-old Harchan Singh Grewal at a crosswalk, sending the elderly man headfirst through his windshield.

Prasad then grabbed his insurance papers and fled the scene on foot, leaving his car and his victim.

Grewal died several weeks later.

Surrey provincial court judge John Lenaghan says the five-year sentence should send a message of deterrence, calling Prasad's actions "cowardly and callous behaviour."

Prasad already had a lengthy driving record.

His lawyer, Bob Bellows, says it's too long a sentence considering the fact that the Crown has asked for a three-year jail term term

"It's always a concern when Crown counsel asks for three years, the sentencing judge exceeds that by two years," says Bellows. "In my respectful opinion, the sentence is too long."

Bellows says the sentence will be appealed.

If it had happened in Texas...

Motorist given 50 year-sentence in windshield murder trial

A Texas jury sentenced Chante Mallard to 50 years for the murder of a homeless man she hit with her car and then left to die in the windshield

FORT WORTH, Texas (CNN) -- Jurors Friday evening sentenced Chante Mallard to 50 years for the murder of a homeless man she hit with her car and then left to die embedded in the windshield.

Mallard was sentenced to 10 years for tampering with evidence. Her sentences will be served concurrently. She was not fined for either conviction.
...Mallard could have been sentenced to as few as five years in prison.

Jack asked only for the sentence and not for a fine. "You cannot buy justice in this county," she said.

Defense attorney Jeff Kearney argued at length for leniency, pointing out that Mallard had no prior convictions, and saying that his client was placed in extraordinary circumstances.

Mmm, Jelly beans!
I was going to buy my cousin some refill Jelly Beans for his pooping Oops a-Daisy cow, since he's been using the same Jelly Beans over and over for about a year now. I went to the Jelly Belly site to order some chocolate flavoured jelly beans, but unfortunately they only ship to US addresses.

I noticed that they had sugar-free Jelly Beans:

Have Jelly Belly beans without the sugar. Our sugar-free formula has 40% fewer calories than regular beans. Included are ten of our most popular flavors: Very Cherry, Tangerine, Green Apple, Juicy Pear, Licorice and others. Net weight 3.1 oz. WARNING: Consumption may cause stomach discomfort and/or a laxative effect. Individual tolerance will vary; we suggest starting with 8 beans or less.

Doesn't that sound yummy?
