dumb allergies
I've been feeling a little "off" this week because of allergies. A couple of days ago I was feeling really clumsy and worthless, but then I thought "hey there is so much I can do!" One of the things that came to mind was walking.
Walking is the single most complex motor function of the human body. Even scientists, who have been studying it for more than 2,000 years, don't yet fully understand it. It involves more than half of the body's 650 muscles and 208 bones, plus more than half of all the ligaments and joints. That's just to take a few steps.

See that? The "single most complex motor function"! Get this... I can walk while doing other stuff at the same time. I don't want to sound like a show-off but I do think that's impressive.

A Minor Toothache

LITTLETON, Colo. -- A dental office X-ray reveals a four-inch nail embedded in the skull of Patrick Lawler, 23, which was removed at Littleton Adventist Hospital in suburban Denver. Lawler unknowingly shot himself with a nail gun Jan. 6 while working in Breckenridge, a ski resort town in the central Colorado mountains. The accident left Lawler with what he thought was a minor toothache and blurry vision. When painkillers and ice failed to stop the ache six days later, he went to a dental office where the nail was discovered.

Perfect day for a slurpee
The weather has been really nice in recent days, and I thought it would be a perfect day to get a slurpee. At home, in the spring and summer, I used to get slurpees almost everyday. American slurpees are different, but still okay. I was about to go to 7-11 to get one, but then I thought "Do they ever clean those machines out?". I don't think they do, which could be the reason some 7-11's smell like a gilly leer. So yeah, I didn't get one. Until I find out whether or not those machines ever get cleaned I won't be drinking any more slurpees. That shouldn't be too difficult, since I can't remember the last time I had one.

Just finished another board exam...
I don't know whether I passed or failed, but I think it went well. I had good patients, with good cavities. I didn't get any pink cards, which are automatic deductions. I was pretty excited about this exam because it was one that didn't require studying... always a good thing.

Random Wiggumism
And, when the doctor said I didn't have worms any more, that was the happiest day of my life.

What does a lion care about a few measly spider bites?
If you notice the spider on a wall, often the Salticus scenicus, it seems as it mocks gravity. It jumps of the walls and falls back on it several centimeters further instead of falling down. If you watch the spider carefully, you can notice that it always releases a lifeline when it jumps. If the jump fails it can crawl back to its original position and it prevents the spider from falling down.
Jumping spiders do not make webs to catch prey. Instead, they hunt their prey on foot. They do use silk to make a small shelter under a leaf or bark.
To catch prey, Jumping Spiders sneak up on it... they can leap great distances when you consider their size.

Nice description
This is described as "INDIAN NECKLACE JEWELRY SET khalsa punjabi sikh gold".
Very "khalsa", very "sikh", and very "gold"!

How could she not notice?
HONG KONG (Reuters) - A Hong Kong hiker washed her face in a freshwater stream, not noticing that leech had wormed its way into one of her nostrils, according to the Hong Kong Medical Journal.
Unaware she was playing host to the creature, the 55-year-old woman only consulted a doctor when her nose started bleeding intermittently about two weeks later...
The first doctor the woman saw could not find anything wrong and it was only when she visited a second doctor that he saw the five-centimeter (two-inch) leech peeking out of her left nostril.

See... I pay attention in class
Today my instructor said something about Sikh immigrants from India running gas stations in America. He used the word "Sikh" so casually... I was shocked. I looked around at everyone else in the class to see if they had looks of confusion on their faces. They didn't. It's possible they weren't listening, or maybe didn't want to seem like they didn't know what a Sikh was, but I think they did know. I sensed no confusion whatsoever. Usually when people ask me what I am , they almost never know what a Sikh is. "Is that what David Koresh was?" someone once asked.

It's almost like they don't want to be liked...
An interview with a German living in America:
GW&M: A sensitive issue that people are often reluctant to discuss concerns the cultural differences in personal hygiene. What are your own experiences?

NETTERFIELD: My husband, like almost any American, showers at least once a day, every morning. Most days he also showers after exercising. That makes two showers every day. In Germany people bathe once a week on Saturday evening.

GW&M: So the old US joke about bathing once a week whether we need it or not is actually the German practice?

NETTERFIELD: I still to this day do not shower regularly every day. I wash in strategically important places every day, but usually will only bathe once a week. When my mom visits us here in the US, she even notices that most people here will not smell like old sweat, but like they are freshly washed. When you are in an elevator in Germany or any other closed confined room, you will smell stale sweat from unwashed bodies. It's just what people are used to.

More moral stories...
1. Slow and steady wins the race. This isn't necessarily true, because sometimes the faster person wins the race (as long as he doesn't get too cocky and doesn't take a nap during the race... maybe that should be the moral: Don't take naps during races?).

2. Grapes are sour? No, not always... I don't get this one. Maybe because the fox can't reach the grapes he consoling himself by saying... well they were sour anyways. Or maybe he's trying to steal grapes and knows he shouldn't. When he eats the forbidden grapes it turns out that they're sour?

3. As you sow, so shall you reap. I don't know about this one. There is a guy sewing. The elephant gets mad at the guy sewing and sprays water at him. Why is the elephant mad? Do elephants in India just lounge around in (or right outside) peoples' houses? Maybe the elephant wants the guy to make him a shirt... like the pink one hanging on the wall.

4. Do not give way to flattery. The poor elephant. First he gets cheated out of a pink shirt and now this. Did the foxes kill him? Does anyone know what's going on here?
